Free Checklist – How to Choose the Right Software Company?

Posted on: April 23rd, 2018 by Simon Swords

Choosing the right software development company to build your new product is essential to the success of your project. Much like when contracting a team of builders to renovate your home, it is so important to make absolutely sure that they are appropriately qualified to complete the work and have the necessary procedures in place to protect both themselves and you throughout the process.

Obviously, there are going to be a lot of things you will need to consider before even approaching a software development company to take on your project; and let’s face it – this is your baby we’re talking about. You need to know that you are passing it over a team that is as passionate about your work as you are.

Some things to keep in mind are:

  • Cost – The saying goes ‘buy cheap, buy twice’, and while this statement does not completely resonate with software development, the principle is most certainly the same. While you want to go for the most cost-effective option, the chances are that if you accept the cheapest quote, you will ultimately pay more by the end of the project.
  • Attitude – Your chosen software development partner should want every project that they take on to be as successful as possible, and it’s for this reason that you should find a company that has a culture of consistent improvement. Do they build their own tools? Do they learn from their mistakes and continuously look for ways to refine processes?
  • Transparency – Software development is complex but those who understand it can articulate how it works in terms that a five-year-old would understand. Don’t get blinded by science, do ask for an understanding of how your software development partner will keep you up to date on the progress. Weekly progress calls and associated reporting on pre-defined milestones are essential.
  • Recommendations – Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback from other clients of the company. Another great way to establish the reliability of a software company is to search for reviews online. Clutch is a great aid for making big decisions about companies. Otherwise, searching for the software development company’s social media accounts will never fail to give you an insight into how their client base feels about them. Any dependable software development company will likely be more than happy to provide you with customer testimonials – most will probably even have these readily available on their website.

These are just a very small few examples of what you will need to consider, so we have compiled this handy checklist of items you should consider before engaging with a software development company to ensure that you are making the right decision for your business.
