Google Chrome Tips

Posted on: July 31st, 2019 by Simon Swords

When it comes to web browsers, most people choose one based on its speed and ease of use. Google Chrome has been the one which people have swayed towards over the past decade.

With that in mind, here are some helpful tips to improve your Chrome experience and productivity.

Use Chrome to check for harmful software

Keeping your computer safe is an integral part of your life these days as it stores personal and financial information about you. However, you can use Chrome to help defend your computer from these harmful pieces of software by following the steps below:

  • Go to the following address in chrome; chrome://settings/
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the ‘advanced’ arrow.
  • This displays more options, scroll to the bottom of the page again.
  • Click ‘Clean up computer’.
  •  You should be shown the option to ‘find harmful software’.
  • Click the ‘find’ button and let the process begin.

The process may take a while, so I would recommend searching another tab whilst waiting.

Restore a tab you accidentally closed: (Ctrl + Shift + T)

Trying to keep your tabs in order can be a challenge. Closing the wrong tab during a clean up can be frustrating and sometimes make you feel like you are wasting your time. By using this tip, you will no longer need to worry about accidentally closing tabs you were on.

  • Use the command ‘ctrl + shift + T’ and you will be able to get back any tabs which you have recently closed. (does not work on incognito)

Cast your screen using chrome

Sometimes, if you have something to show your colleagues or friends, the screen you are viewing it on is not large enough for a group of people to easily see. This tip allows you to cast your chrome window to any compatible Chromecast device using the following steps.

  • When on a webpage you wish to cast, right-click and select the ‘Cast’ option in the menu.
  • A small dialog appears at the top of the screen asking you what type of cast you would like to start.
  • Any Chromecast enabled devices will show up in the list and then you are free to cast video or audio to the device.

Re-open all your previous tabs when restarting your PC

Updates for your computer can sometimes come at the most awkward times, and trying to remember what tabs you had open after a 5-minute restart can sometimes be challenging, following the steps below will allow your Chrome browser to launch all of the tabs which you previously open.

  • Go to the following URL; chrome://settings/
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page.
  • Select the “Continue where you left off” option.

Now, if you are in the middle of something important and your PC needs to restart, all of your chrome tabs will be saved. (Incognito tabs and windows cannot be saved).

Create a desktop shortcut to your favourite website

Storing all of your favourite sites in the bookmarks bar can eventually become cluttered. Use the guide below to create a desktop shortcut that will take you directly to your desired site.

  • Navigate to the website of your choice.
  • Click the three dots in the top right of your Chrome window.
  • Select the ‘More Tools’ option from the list.
  • When the smaller sub-menu expands, select ‘Create a Shortcut’ from the menu.
  • Enter a title for your shortcut.
  • Click the ‘Create’ button.

Whenever you want to launch a frequently used site, you can now do it straight from your desktop. Selecting the option to open as window will allow your chrome windows to be solely for that app and allow you to create a sort of “app” from the webpage; handy if you have some websites which you use frequently.
